Around 10 people killed in shooting at Orebro school

Police say about 10 people were killed in a gunfire at an educational center in central Sweden, including the suspect.

RISBERGSKA School was shot at Orebro, 200 km (124 miles) to the west of the capital Stockholm, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they believed that the perpetrator was among the dead and that he was not known to them before. They said that there was no specific motivation immediately and believed that he was acting alone.

They warned on Tuesday evening that the death toll could continue to rise as many people were injured.

“This is a very tragic accident,” said Urebro police chief Roberto Eid.

Earlier, the Swedish Prime Minister said it was “a very painful day for everyone in Sweden.”

A number of injured people were transferred to the hospital, with at least four people undergoing operations.

The police initially said that five people had been shot, and that it was investigated as an attempt to murder, intentional burning and severe weapons crime.

Local media later began reporting that many people died, before the police said “about 10” who were killed, but “they could not be more specific” about the number of deaths.

They also confirmed that there was no “terrorist” motivation behind the attack.

Police heard reports of gunfire at the Rispergska School – Adult Education Center – 12:33 local time (11:44 GMT). The facility sits on the campus that includes other schools.

These centers are mainly attended by people who have not finished primary or high school.

Earlier, students in many nearby schools were kept at “security purposes”.

“We don’t want the public members to go there,” the police chief Forest warned.

Local media reported that nearby hospitals have cleared emergency rooms and intensive care units to liberate patients.

The University of Orebro Hospital said that five people were wounded in the emergency room. She said that an additional sixth person, who had not hit a rifle, had been treated with “minor injuries.”

The municipality in the province of Orbro said in an update, that no children were among the people who were treated there.

Teacher Lina Warnemark SVT, Swedish General Radio, told her that she heard about 10 gunshots near her studies.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said today that “a very painful day for everyone in Sweden”, where he participated in that those who have a “ordinary school day” are “with terrorism” are all in his ideas.

“Commitment to classrooms with fear of your life is a nightmare that no one should experience,” Christmson said in a post on X.

“The government is in close contact with the police authority and closely monitoring developments.”

The Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strummer, echoed those notes, and told the local broadcaster SVT, “The news of the attack in Orebro is very dangerous.”
