Aftershocks hit Santorini and surrounding islands

Santorini was subjected to a strong earthquake, 5.3, which is the strongest to strike the Greek island during the recent seismic activity in the region.

The tremors were felt in Athens on Monday evening and measuring the depth of the focus of 17 km (10.6 miles).

The inhabitants of the neighboring island remain at maximum alert after the last tremor, which follows a moderate earthquake of 5.0 magnitude between the islands on Sunday evening.

The tourist hot point has been threatened through seismic activity since January, and more than 1,2,800 earthquakes have been discovered by the earthquake laboratory at the University of Athens.

Some residents were seen patrolling in dangerous areas to deter tourists from taking pictures on the slopes.

The landslides occurred in many parts of Santorini due to the frequency and intensity of tremors and experts did not rule out a major earthquake.

Seismologists were optimistic about the severity of the earthquake that began to calm down, but they are now worried about their exacerbation.

The state of emergency will remain valid in Santorini until March 3.

On Sunday, an earthquake preceded three smaller than 4.0, while Monday morning was also more than 4.0.

I did not find any damage to buildings in Santorini or Amorgos.

No injuries were reported as a result of earthquakes, which have declined in thousands since January 26, but more than 11,000 people left the islands.

Schools will remain closed to Santorini, Amegra and many other islands on Monday and Tuesday.

A team from the Amorgos Special Responsibility Unit launched from Patras with a special vehicle to save earthquakes, and the technical teams are expected to check the electricity network on the island.

“The authorities had to allow the situation to continue in most of February or all.

“Let’s hope that we will slowly move towards canceling the gradual escalation,” he said.

“We will have to be a small patient and see. Let’s hope that after two weeks of the phenomenon it will start weak.”

He said that the possibility of a large earthquake was not completely excluded.

Meanwhile, the Serose Viking ship, which includes 893 passengers and 470 crews, in the port of Soda on Crete is early on Monday morning.

It was scheduled to be the first tourist ship for this season in Santorini. The ship mainly changed its way to avoid overcrowding in Santorini during seismic activity.

The strongest earthquake so far was 5.2 on Thursday. Six and above are severe.

Greece is one of the most earthquake countries in Europe, but scientists are confused about the current “earthquake groups” that have not been linked with great shock.

Santorini on what is known as the Hellenic volcanic arc, a series of islands created by volcanoes, but the last large eruption was in the fifties.

The Greek authorities said that the recent tremors were linked to tectonic, not volcanic activity.

Scientists cannot predict the exact timing, size or location of earthquakes.

From January 26 to February 8, 2025, the Seismology Laboratory (SL) from the University of Athens recorded more than 12,800 earthquakes in the Santoriniurgos region.
