US President Donald Trump has announced the collection of a new tariff on all the three largest commercial partners in America, China, Mexico and Canada.
Trump said the United States will impose 25 % definitions on Canada and Mexico, and 10 % on China. Canadian energy faces a 10 % less tariff.
He threatened to impose import taxes if the three countries did not take his concerns about illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Together, the trio made up more than 40 % of imports in the United States last year.
“Today’s tariff announcement is necessary for the contract of China, Mexico and Canada responsible for their promises to stop the flood of toxic drugs to the United States,” the White House said in a statement on Saturday.
Trump posted on the social truth platform: “This was done through the IEEPA law because of the main threat to illegal foreigners and fatal drugs that kill our citizens, including fentanel.”
In practice, the customs tariff is a local tax that is imposed on goods upon entering the country, commensurate with the value of import.
China has warned of protectionism, as Trump’s return to the presidency renews the threat of trade war between the world’s largest economist.
China Vice President Deng Xuexiang told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last month that his country was looking for a “victory” solution for commercial tensions and wanted to expand its imports.
Canada and Mexico said that they will respond to the American definitions of their goods with their own measures, while also seeking Washington’s assertion that they are taking measures to address concerns about their American borders.
In an attempt to completely avoid customs tariffs, Ottawa promised to implement $ 1.3 billion (900 million dollars; 700 million pounds) from new security measures along its American border.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the media on Saturday evening.
Customs duties on Canada enter into force on Tuesday.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce issued a statement before it was called “Trump’s very annoying decision” regarding the customs tariff.
She said that the definitions will have “immediate and direct consequences for Canadian and American livelihoods” and will significantly increase the cost of everything for everyone. ”
In clarifying the reason for targeting its commercial partners, the White House said that the Mexican cartals were responsible for trafficking in fentanel, methamphetamine and other medications.
She said that the customs tariff for Canada will remain even “cooperation with the United States against drug dealers and border security.”
Finally, “China plays the main role in the fentanel crisis” with fatal artificial pain residence.
