Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni says she was placed under the judicial investigation of Italy’s sudden launch of a Libyan citizen who was wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In a joint video message on social media on Tuesday, Meloni said it was suspected by prosecutors in embezzlement, helping and inciting a crime.
Osama Njeim – also known as ALMASRI – is the head of the judicial police in Libya and director of the reputable detention center in Metiga, near Tripoli.
The Ministry of the Interior said that Mr. Njeim was arrested in Italy on January 21 and was released unexpectedly after “due to the legal technology.”
ICC, who said it was not consulted, quickly issued another arrest warrant for Mr. Njeim and demanded an interpretation of the Italian authorities.
In the video, Meloni said that the Appeals Court in Rome issued Mr. Njeim because the International Criminal Court order was not sent to the Italian Ministry of Justice.
Meloni said: “At this stage, so that he is not allowed to liberate on Italian soil, we decided to expel him and return him immediately, with a special trip.”
Last week, Justice Minister Carlo Nordo said that Mr. Njeim was expelled because of the “danger” he presented – a commentary of the opposition.
The opposition and non -governmental organizations such as the decision to liberate Mr. Njeim greatly by the opposition and NGOs such as Amnesty International, which said that Njeim was guilty of “the horrific violations committed with complete escape.”
Videos, which showed a crowded crowd to welcome Mr. Njeim as a Italian government plane in Tripoli caused a special uproar.
Meloni said that Nordo, Interior Minister Matteo Banetusi and cabinet of intelligence, Alfredo Mantophano, had also been placed under investigation. His position in the investigation of Italy does not mean that the official fees will necessarily follow.
In a challenging tone, the Italian Prime Minister seemed to hint on political motives for investigation.
She referred to the lawyer who filed the complaint, Luigi Lee Gotti, was a former leftist politician, while the public prosecutor was leading the case, Francesco Le Foui recently. The investigation of Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini on an unrelated issue.
Meloni ended the video, saying it could not be “blackmail or intimidation.”
“This may be the reason why I am unpopular among those who do not want Italy to change and improve,” she said. “But this is exactly the reason why I intend to continue on my way, and protect the Italians, especially when the nation’s safety is at stake, HEAD holds it without fear.”
Matteo Renzi of the opposition party, Italy alive (fourth) – who was among the first to denounce the release of Mr. Njeim – said he felt that Meloni was “using” the investigation of “feeding the usual victims complex.”
Georgia Meloni, the leader of the right -wing brotherly brothers in the Italian party, has presided over the right -wing Italy alliance since 2022.
She has repeatedly pledged to immigration and pledged to stop the boats heading to Italy from North Africa, and pledged to put an end to illegal departures and human trafficking.
Meloni, like the other leaders who preceded her, worked with the Libyan authorities and militias, and providing them with financial and technical support under controversial agreements to address illegal immigration, including training and financing for the Libyan Coast Guard, which hinders migrant boats.
