Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have returned to the remaining homes in northern Gaza

Adham Bartawi was hoping that he would be the best when he returned to his family’s home in northern Gaza after more than a year – but he was shocked by what he found.

“Half of our house,” the 31 -year -old told the BBC from the ruins of the place where he lived in the northern city of Zahra.

He said: “It seems that it was wrapped – the living room has gone, the kitchen went, and most of it is over. The only thing remaining is two rooms and one bath … if you leave now, it may be looted.” .

Adham is one of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who returned to the north because Israel allowed the displaced residents to start returning on Monday.

The return is the result of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, which aims to end the war permanently when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

“A huge and huge effort” to ensure the provision of the main services to those who return to the north.

A man who returned to his home in Gabalia BBC told “it cannot be described” the destruction around him.

“You are talking to me while clearing a space to place a tent … We try to manage ourselves and find a way to live here,” a phone.

“I was happy and repeated on the way back, but when I got to my house, I was disappointed by the catastrophic scene in front of me. I wished never came.”

The United Nations estimates that about 70 % of Gaza Strip’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed since October 2023, with many worst destruction in the north.

Sam Rose, Acting Director of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza, told BBC that residents in northern Gaza are likely to “double the next few days.”

“What they will return to, many of them, is scenes of complete destruction. They know before they travel that their homes are likely to be destroyed or damaged, but they want to go home anyway,” he said.

“Since the ceasefire entered into force a week ago, basic aid supplies came, so we are able to provide food, some water, basic shelter supplies, and some monitoring of weak cases in particular. But it is a tremendous and huge effort in the future of us.”

Many people are preparing for a trip from south to north in the coming days, on foot or the car.

Ihab Qraqeh, a communications worker who has been displaced since mid -October 2023, said he waited to find out how to reveal the first day of return before it started.

“We have sent some members of our family yesterday and now we are planning to go. We are waiting for the car to come so that we can start packing and go,” he said.

A man spoke to the BBC on Monday, who was preparing for the trip with his pregnant wife, that they set out, but they turned.

“It was very difficult for us. I was afraid to suffer from complications. She is eight years old. So we went back [to wait at a relative’s home in central Gaza]Khalil Shapir, 32, said.

“Even using a car, the road is countless – the auto line is countless when you look at it.”
