The families of 90 Palestinian prisoners in the occupied West Bank are anxiously awaiting their release from Israeli prisons as part of the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release agreement.
Hundreds gathered in the town square in Beitunia, about 1.6 kilometers from the road leading to Israel’s Ofer prison, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans.
Amidst an atmosphere of excitement and nervous anticipation, Diash Dara was waiting for her sister Hadeel.
The 32-year-old university administrative employee was detained without charge for seven months.
Dias told the BBC: “I think I’m happy and a little confused by what happened in Gaza.”
“The most important thing is that they stopped the war in Gaza. Even if she is not released today, we will [would] Be okay with it. But at least the war is over.”
The majority of the 90 Palestinian prisoners expected to be released on Sunday are women, in addition to a number of children.
Over the next six weeks, there will be more anxious days.
About 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and detainees are scheduled to be released from Gaza in the first phase of the deal in exchange for 33 Israeli hostages, including the three women who were released by Hamas in Gaza on Sunday afternoon.
Among the prominent prisoners is Zakaria Al-Zubaidi, the former commander of the armed Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank.
The 49-year-old has spent time in Israeli and Palestinian prisons for multiple crimes, including murder.
He said that he carried out a shooting attack in 2002 in which six Israelis were killed.
Al-Zubaidi also made news in 2021, when he exited an Israeli prison through a tunnel before being arrested again five days later.
