South Korean President was released from detention after a court in Seoul canceled his arrest for technical reasons.
On Saturday, Yun Suk Yol went on Saturday to chants of his supporters – but he still faces a trial on charges of rebellion after his failed attempt to impose martial law in December.
He was arrested in January in a dawn raid in the presidential palace after two nervous weeks, where he resisted the entry and there were clashes between his security details and the police.
But he walked free on Saturday, 52 days after the reservation. “I bend my head with gratitude to the people of this nation,” he said in a statement distributed by his lawyers after his release.
After waving the supporters outside the center, he was led in an official convoy to the presidential complex in Seoul, where more supporters received him.
More than 50,000 protesters organized his support in the capital on Saturday, while there was also a little smaller of importance.
Mr. Yoon’s lawyers obtained his release after he was said to be illegal to be detention. The courts agreed, based on a number of legal technical aspects, although the prosecutors described the ruling as “unfair”.
It is scheduled to be tried later this year to try to place the democratic country under customary law. It lasted only six hours – but it attracted the nation.
If he is convicted that he may face life imprisonment or even a death penalty.
Although he is currently commenting in his post, Mr. Yun is still the South Korean president by name.
He also faces a separate decision from the Constitutional Court that will decide whether to hold his accountability and formally strip his position. The judges are expected to be in the coming days.
Despite court cases, Mr. Yoon’s supporters gathered around him – and the authorities are preparing for disturbances.
