BBC News, Kyiv
Whether President Foloderir Zelinski is an ambush or was more diplomatic in the Oval Office, it was a catastrophic visit to Ukraine.
For those who are watching in Kyiv, the future of their country was stuck in balance.
“It was an emotional conversation, but I understand our president,” Yulia told me next to the Golden Cathedral of Saint Saint Sophia.
“Perhaps he was not a diplomat, but he was honest. It is related to life, we want to live.”
Yulia reflects a political pattern in Ukraine: the more the country is attacked, the more unit there.
Before the comprehensive invasion in 2022, President Zelensky ranked 37 %. Next, go up to 90 %.
Before Donald Trump returned to his position at the beginning of 2025, he was 52 %. After he blamed Ukraine for the start of the war, it reached 65 %.
“they [Donald Trump and JD Vance] “They do not respect the people of Ukraine,” says Andrei, 30, says.
“It seems that Washington is supporting Russia!” Note DMYTRO, 26.
You are wondering what the past 24 hours did to President Zelinski’s popularity.
“When the situation becomes worse, we have another crowd on science,” explains Voludmir Banioto, director of the Kiev International Sociology Institute who conducted some voting.
World leaders are often fade with time, and Mr. Banioto says President Zelinski was not fortified.
Its classifications were particularly successful with the failed Ukraine attack of 2023, and after that a year after the leader of the famous commander in his armed forces, Valerie Zaluzni.
But Donald Trump’s new approach, transactions, often in Ukraine forced the country to unify and support more uncertainty.
Not the least with warming for Russia.
“The initial reaction was breastfeeding,” says the opposition deputy in Ena Sofson.
“It was difficult to see a president who was a victim of the Russian aggression that was attacked by the leader of the free world,” she added. “It is painful.”
Ukrainian television channels reported yesterday’s scenes in a more measurely manner: that dealing with minerals between Ukraine and the United States was not simply signed.
Perhaps, since it did not include the American security guarantees that Kyiv and Europe wanted desperately, it was not puzzled by Zelinski as suggested.
“We need to find stronger allies in Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan, who were supporting us all.”
It is clear that there are deep feelings of resentment between Washington and Kiev. However, Sovsun does not believe that Ukraine should give up negotiations, but instead it should be reformulated.
“It is important to find the right mediator,” she says. “Someone can recognize Trump, but someone we trust too. A person like Georgia Meloni from Italy.
“We should not agree on the president’s call to resign, and I say this as a member of the opposition. He defies the idea of democracy itself.”
President Zelinski was hoping that his visit in Washington would lead to deeper cooperation with the United States, which could always bring peace. Something believes that novsun wants no one more than Ukrainians.
“We who suffer, very difficult to live under this pressure,” she added. “Only this morning, I read that my friend was killed, his second son in this war.”
What the MP and countless Ukrainians do not want is an urgent settlement. Attempts to stop the shooting with Russia in 2014 and 2015 only tried not to be allowed to prepare for Gaza widely after years.
“We knew it would be difficult, and this is not difficult.”
Ukrainian MP Ivana Cleembush-Tansadiz expected that Trump’s second presidency would be less sympathetic to the issue of her country, but not to this extent.
“This metal agreement does not obligate America to help us militarily, or in the upscale or continue the support it currently provides,” she says.
While there is still a parliamentary unit behind President Zellinski and suspended elections, deputies like Klympush-Tsyntsadze are calling for more participation in negotiations.
The head of the European Solidarity Party is former President Petro Poroshenko, a fierce competitor to Zelinski.
He was recently punished by the leader of Ukraine over what the security service describes in Ukraine as “threats to national security” and “creating obstacles to economic development.” Mr. Poroshenko said he is “political motivated.”
Nevertheless, the former president said he realized the legitimacy of Zelinski as a leader, to combat American and Russian allegations, on the contrary.
When the sirens cry and the missiles fall into the cities, this war is still raging, despite all the talk about its termination.
Russia does not retract its demands for the political surrender of Ukraine and full control of four regions.
“This war is not for some regions, town, or trill in the east,” says Taras Chamott, head of Al -Awda Foundation.
After Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, the organization was created for mass military equipment to fight the Ukrainian forces.
“This is the war that will determine the global system for future decades. Whether this world will continue to exist on how this war is going,” he says.
While his policy is continuing, “America First”, Trump wants Europe to provide security on a continent in which he is less willing to do so. But Europe is divided into this, and where there is an agreement, peace is not possible without the United States as a safety network.
“Europe and the world again want to close their eyes and faith in a miracle, but miracles do not happen.”
“Countries must accept the truth of the situation and do something about it. Otherwise, you will be the person who disappears after that – after Ukraine.”
