US suspends tariffs after Colombia agrees to deportation flights

The White House said that the United States will not go ahead with the imposition of customs duties on Colombia, after the country agreed to accept – without restrictions – deported immigrants.

Donald Trump had ordered 25% customs duties on all Colombian goods after his president prevented two US military deportations from landing in the country on Sunday.

The Colombian President Gustavo Petro initially responded by saying that his country would accept the two departments on “civilian planes, without being treated as criminals.”

A White House statement said that Colombia has now agreed to accept migrants arriving on US military aircraft “without restrictions or delay.” Colombia says Washington has agreed to treat its citizens returning to dignity.

On Sunday, Petro refused to enter US military deportations, saying that the migrants should be returned “with dignity and respect.”

In response, Trump announced “urgent and decisive revenge measures” in a post on his social networking site “Truth Suosal”, including customs duties and visas penalties.

Petro responded to X in a publication in which he announced his customs tariffs and celebrated the heritage and flexibility of Colombia.

He said: “Your siege does not scare me, because Colombia, along with being a country of beauty, is the heart of the world.”

Within hours, the two sides seemed to have resolved the dispute. The White House said that Colombia agreed to “all the demands of President Trump.”

The White House said that Trump’s customs duties were “fully formulated” and will remain in effect if Colombia does not respect this agreement.

Trump also announced the imposition of sanctions on visas and the promotion of Colombian inspections on the border. The White House said that these measures will remain “until the first columpical plane is successfully returned.”
